Richard Mille Quietly Unveils Limited Edition Collaboration with Ferrari Formula 1 Driver – RM72-01 “Charles LeClerc”

With more Formula 1 news following the action-packed Miami Grand Prix weekend, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Richard Mille has quietly teamed up with long-time friend (aka brand ambassador) and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to launch a new watch. The new RM72-01 “Charles Leclerc” Limited Edition uses the brand’s automatic flyback chronograph platform with several tweaks for the much-loved Monegasque F1 driver.
The most notable design change is the white Quartz TPT case with red stripes and case center ring, a nod to the Monegasque flag. The skeletonized chronograph dispenses with hour numerals, while the running seconds hand and counters retain the same red and white color scheme. This watch is equipped with Richard Miller's CRMC-1 movement, a flyback chronograph with 30-minute and 24-hour cumulative timekeeping, a running seconds hand, a column wheel control system and a double tilted pinion clutch system. The movement also has a function indicator to show the position of the crown (winding, setting or date adjustment) and a semi-instantaneous date display. The watch vibrates at a frequency of 28,800 times per hour, is equipped with a copper beryllium (CuBe) free-sprung adjustable mass balance wheel and a fast-rotating mainspring barrel, and has a power reserve of up to 50 hours. The automatic winding system uses a platinum rotor and is equipped with ceramic bearings.

Story time: This is the first time I discovered a dog-powered watch. While many brands have gone out of their way to use Formula 1 and its ambassadors to launch watches, Richard Mille said nothing about the launch of this watch. Instead, I was treated to a lovely video of the perpetually excited F1 star Leo Leclerc (Charles Leclerc’s adorable dachshund) playing with Charles after the Miami Grand Prix. This prompted a Google search, and as of early Tuesday morning, the only information I could find was a post from a dealer in Dubai with a photo of him holding the watch – and despite Charles having been wearing it since the Bahrain Grand Prix – no one seemed to have noticed. This pretty much confirmed that this watch was not a prototype, but an official product. Luckily, I got official information straight from Richard Mille, and now we have the RM72-01 “Leo Leclerc” – I mean… “Charles Leclerc” edition – in our possession. My opinion? I like it a lot – maybe not for myself, but definitely for Leclerc.
There’s no point in the Richard Mille price controversy – they’re all ultra-limited, ultra-exclusive and expensive watches, and that’s exactly the point. They’re also usually pretty eye-catching, so why not throw in some of that, as Richard Mille would do with one of their closest friends? Yes, this watch does have a bit of a “mint” feel to it, but who cares? Of course, I’d personally always go for something more understated, like the black RM67-02, but for the Ferrari driver in Monaco, this watch is perfect.
