MEOE Hungarian Kuvasz Club
Objectives
I, Principle:
Based on the opinion of the club management and membership we wish to proceed in three main directions in kennel-work, that is: carriage – value in use, nervous system – health. This is to be done taking the current problems and priorities serving the interest of the species into consideration.
1, Outlook:
- From 1st January 2008 each dog newly introduced into kennel-work is compulsory to have a breeding inspection.
- A judgement paper allowing a unified computerized processing should be used during the breeding inspection, where measurable body dimensions are included.
- At the spring general assembly, the club will set out the most important species and carriage features, which will be submitted to the judges. For example, withers height – the standard should be kept to by the lower value, otherwise the kuvasz may loose the imposing outlook, head – elongated head should be de-emphasized, strong, wide and well-developed jaws are important, movement – anatomy – greater emphasize should be given to stiff back, good saliences, etc. These are under elaboration at the moment, the club will discuss and approve this in February.
2, Value in use, nervous system:
- At the main breeding inspection of the club, each dog takes part in a basic temper inspection, those performing poorly are to be disqualified or ordered back. Moreover, a so-called usability level estimation is to be carried out, which shows the working inclination, capability, and courage of the dog. (the carriage and instinct examination included in the breeding inspection can be found on the homepage of the club – it will be translated later)
- The above results will be registered in a computer database, in a similar way as the carriage features.
- The club supports the demonstration group dealing with the training of the kuvasz, and prefers and remunerates individuals outstanding in work.
- As far as it is capable of, the club supports displacement of the species back to its original environment. For example: kuvasz and wolf programme. The club also seeks other fields of use of the species, for example life-guard dogs.
3, Health:
- In the field of dysplasia, from 1st January 2008 each dog newly introduced in breeding can only receive the final breeding license based on the X-ray result.
- The club accepts only the results from the Independent Dysplasia Committee (FDB), and the Hungarian pet orthopaedic association. Since, based on experiences so far, the judgement of X-rays is different within the country, and also in several countries in the world, FDB set out a clause in its statues, according to which each dog with an FDB number can be internationally bred without any restrictions, the club accepts it and recommends the same towards foreign organizations.
- PRA. It is about an aspect of selection with little past history. The present state is not a question of breeding results, but that of luck. The club starts releasing the stock, but this aspect is not considered to be the most important in selection. (According to the opinion of animal breeding experts even the line of a handicapped dog can be released within two generations, the situation is to be treated besides maintaining other important characteristics.)
- Each dog with a PRA status can be bred in case puppies with better status are born. For example, handicapped – released coupling, only bearers can be born, which cannot become ill.
- The club does not intend to “throw out the baby with the bath water”, i.e. to extinguish rather important characteristics for the species, listed in the above two points. In case a higher risk is found in practice (kuvaszes become blind), aggravation can be expected.
- From 2010 PRA filtering will be compulsory, within the duration of patience each breeder has the chance to consciously improve their situation. In the meantime we propagate and support filtering. (Within a half year more than thirty dogs were filtered.)
II, Other aims of the club (schematically):
- Organizing professionally high-level, sociable events.
- Creating a database to facilitate kennel-work and to follow the changes in the stock.
- Improvement, operation of the homepage and forum, involving fresh and more and more foreign language information.
- Tightening the relationship, and co-operation with foreign clubs.
- Popularizing the kuvasz, film, articles, granting the ambassador of the kuvasz award to a known person.
- Publishing an almanac, and delivering the book including the most important knowledge to each new kuvasz owner.
The above objectives were composed with the agreement of the club management (Imre Géczi, Zoltán Pető, Ferenc Pischoff), the article is allowed to be published only as a whole by the club.
