Thought those of you on this board would be interested in an email message I sent out this morning to Kuvasz-L: Happy 13th Birthday to Ximanya! Yes, X turned 13 today and started out her day as she would prefer--with something delicious to eat.;) She had lamb steak for breakfast. She was so funny. She liked that steak so much she couldn't bear to swallow it immediately, and carried it around for a about 10 minutes. Her cheeks were puffed out like a chipmunk. This past year she has slowed down quite a bit (except for when it comes to catching snacks tossed her way in mid airg). She can't LEAP into the van anymore, so I bought her some steps so she can ascend in a more dignified manner. X may not be as limber as she once was, but her hips are still good, and I have to say having an older dog with good hips makes all the difference in the world. So I am extremely grateful to all those breeders responsible for breeding the dogs in her pedigree and for putting a priority on good hips (as well as temperament and type). That means a big thank you to: Jan and Olga Schmidt (of Brantwoods in Canada) for breeding Ximanya and letting me have her Jozsef Juhasz in Hungary for breeding X's sire Vertesi Selymes Emir Andras Kovacs (Hungary) for his assistance with the importation of Emir and Iluska (pregnant with X's dam Hava when imported) Magda Zimanyi for letting me use her lovely name! Hi everybody, Yes, it is quiet here in this corner. But Melissa and me are not the only members in this Forum. Where are the others ? Well, as for myself, I was invited to join a Kuvasz Meeting in Sweden, this summer. We spent a good time there. Have been visiting a CAC Show, taking part in a Rallye with a male Kuvasz who was owned by our host. And met my friend Christina Klosterberg who have had imported a daughter of our male Maros. Of course, we talked a lot. And finally, I was supposed to be judging in the inofficial Show ( a Fun - Match ) of the Meeting. There were over 20 Kuvaszok to be judging. A great deal for me. Now we're back in normal life. Work, housechores, family, training dogs and horses, club stuff to do, business as usual. Last weekend we went on a hiking tour in the Mountains and our 10 years old male Kuvasz Maros was with us. I am so happy and greatful, that he still is healthy and in top condition. That is, in a nutshell, what we did during the summer Greetings from Switzerland Susa & Maros

Hi Tessie, Outsider was quicker than I. But I hope, I may post this anyway. Tessie, thank you for your statement on this subject. I did not mean to offend you. I’m terrible sorry, if I sounded like this. It was not my intention to. I do admire your effort and enthusiasm on this subject. And as I said, in my previous posting, - I can understand you on the one side. Anyway, allow me please to correct you in the one or other phrase. I did call Optigen too and talked to them directly. Yes, Laboklin approached Optigen for the license reason. Which also Optigen confirmed. But, neither Optigen, nor Laboklin said, that they would have an agreement !! On the contrary. Both of them said, that they would currently be in NEGOTIATION. Which is a huge difference. You said, Laboklin’s Test is not safe ….. But how can you know that ? They use the same basic methods like Optigen. There are some dog-breed clubs who have had their dogs tested independend with Optigen AND Laboklin as well. And got the same results. For example the Retriever Club of Switzerland and the German Labrador Club did so. You can check it on their websites, see Ringtest. And compared with the little number of tested Kuvasz, many more hundreds of dogs of all Retriever breeds have been tested twice with both companies. And why does Optigen re-test Laboklin tested dogs and on the other hand Laboklin does re-test Optigen tested dogs ? Why is that ??? To me, this policy sounds very political. As for me it is important, that we do have the option at all to get our dogs tested. I don’t care if it is in the US or in Germany. Important is, that the test is safe and available. So far the Ringtest tells, the Laboklin test must be correct, otherwise, there must have been a difference in the results. But this was not the case. So why should we Europeans not use the opportunity of Germany, for a lower price and for a shorter way of shipping the blood samples ? Concerning the Patent and copy of the test. I think it is known that in Medical Research and Science it is common and absolutely legal to copy tests, procedures and treatments, after it has been published and – most important, as long as there is NO VALID Patent on it, in the country concerned. My information is, that at the time Laboklin copied that Test, - there was NO Patent for the European continent existing. In the time being, things have changed and now the Int. Patent is pending …. So time and the patent attorney will tell, what the consequences will be in this certain case. Susa & Maros

Hi Tessie! Thank you for your letters about PRA. It was very useful for us to make decisions. In your first letter you wrote that "Did Laboklin do anything other than copy Optigen's test from what was in published scientific papers?" No, they did not do anything else, they are using the SAME METHOD like Optigen, which were publish. In your last letter you presented the patents of the PRA test. Based on it now it is patented only in USA, Canada and UK. This two things means that now Laboklin is using the metod of Optigen, and it is totally legal. When these questions appeared, I contacted directly with Laboklin, and they are confirmed which I wrote above. I do not know what will happened when this method will patent internationally, whether Laboklin will get the right to use it or not, but now they results are the same than the Optigens results theoretically and practically too. szerintem... bár én csak egy outsider vagyok Drágossy Zsolt leánykori névvel :)

Hi Susa, Regarding my post #315. I also do not like rumors. I do check my information, and I stand by my post. I have kept in touch by both email and phone with Optigen and over a period of months have talked to them multiple times. I contacted Optigen about my post #315 and asked them to look at it to see if I should make any corrections. Not one was suggested. My post is okay although you may not agree with it. If you wish to verify what's in my post, feel free to contact Optigen. The phone nubmer is 607 257 0301 and email is [email protected] Here is information from Optigen's web page about patents on the prcd PRA test: OptiGen holds the exclusive license for these tests from Cornell Research Foundation, Inc.: prcd-PRA US Patent No. 5,804,388 prcd-PRA Canadian Patent No. CA2306194 prcd-PRA U.K. Patent No. 2 341 926 prcd-PRA Mutation Patent Pending, International prcd-PRA LD Patent Pending, International As you can see, multiple patents have already been issued. The international patents are expected at any time. Very soon. And when that does happen, Laboklin will have to stop doing the prcd PRA test. International treaties and patent laws are complicated and sometimes it just takes less time to wait for the patent to be formally issued that to opt for slow court systems. But once the international patents are issued, which I've said is expected VERY SOON, the people who had their dogs tested by Laboklin may be in a difficult situation. What kennel clubs will accept those test results then? Not all kennel clubs accept Laboklin prcd PRA test results now (people should investigate and see which ones do not). So the Laboklin prcd PRA tested dogs may need to be retested in order for the results to be considered official by all the kennel clubs. I also thought I would share some of the discussions I had over the phone with Optigen yesterday. Optigen has been approached by Laboklin to get a licensing agreement for Optigen's prcd PRA test. There is NO agreement. Optigen does not know what the test is that Laboklin is doing for prcd PRA. Optigen and Labolin are not sharing results of their testing with each other. In private email with other individuals studying PRA (not anyone working for either company) I have been told that Laboklin has wanted to retest Kuvasz already tested by Optigen for prcd PRA and that I should "guess the reason why".
